When the Mango Tree Blossomed, seventeen stories written in English and thirty-three stories translated from Bangla, has been published as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh. The anthology contains a range of stories covering the history of Bangladesh to the present situation of Rohingya refugees. Other stories are on a variety of subjects and reveal the richness of Bangladeshi writing. The stories have been grouped in six themes. The writers of this anthology include well-known authors as well as newer writers in both Bangla and English. Many of the writers have received national awards such as the Bangla Academy Award, the Ekushey Padak, the Swadhinata Padak, the prestigious Anannya Sahitya Puroshkar and Lekhika Sangha Award. Some of the writers have also won international awards or been short-listed for them. Most of the translators are themselves creative writers. Readers interested in short stories by Bangladeshis, at home or in different parts of the world, will find “When the Mango Tree Blossomed” a veritable treasure trove.
